Co-flowering plant species may share pollinators and such sharing can result in heterospecific pollen transfer.Transfer of heterospecifc pollen along with conspecific pollen leads to plant-plant interactions on the style. In this talk, I first elucidate how common these interactions are in nature and then explore the factors that influence the variance in frequency/intensity of pollen-pollen interactions using data from three natural co-flowering communities in biodiversity hotspots. Finally, I describe experiments that address the magnitude of fitness consequences of these interactions. In sum, this work contributes to understanding the role of heterospecific pollen transfer in the ecology and evolution of natural flowering plant communities as well as predicting the consequences of community disruptors on these communities.
